In 2020, Scottish contemporary folk quartet Rura celebrated their 10th Anniversary with a live album recorded at a hometown gig at Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket situated in the city’s stylish Merchant quarter. As Johnny noted in his album review here, the band, featuring Steven Blake (Pipes & Keys), Adam Brown (Acoustic & Electric Guitar), David Foley (Bodhran & Flute) and Jack Smedley (Fiddle & Strings), had plenty to celebrate. They made a breakthrough at 2010’s Celtic Connections where they won the Danny Kyle Award, followed in 2011 with ‘Up and Coming Artist of the Year’ at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards and then, in the 2015 edition of those awards, ‘Live Act of the Year’.

With a live album under their belt, collaboration was the next natural step. In their own words:

“In the early days, RURA travelled in style; in an overloaded, three-door, barely functioning Ford Fiesta. Almost always, the highlight of those journeys was sharing music by our favourite artists. Since coming together in 2010, releasing a record featuring musicians that we love has never been far from our minds, and in January 2021 we decided to make it happen.”

On February 4th, they will release Our Voices Echo featuring special guests Michael McGoldrick, Duncan Chisholm, Ross Ainslie, Hannah Rarity and Julie Fowlis. It marks a milestone for the band who added, “We would like to dedicate Our Voices Echo to everyone who has inspired and supported us over the years. This one’s for you.”
